Some questions asked by customers

Regarding Ionic Detection

Using ionic detector models, can I search for recently lost objects?

No! Objects must be buried for more than 10 years to generate an ionic field detectable by the equipment.

What is the maximum distance that directional models can detect?

There is no fixed distance. The range depends on the size or quantity of the material and how long it has been buried. The longer the time, the stronger the ionic field and the greater the detection distance.

How long must an object be buried to generate an ionic field?

When a metal is buried, three processes begin immediately: oxidation, corrosion, and the formation of oxides, hydroxides, and metallic salts. These compounds release ions into the soil.

Over time, these ions form an ionic cloud around the object. The older the object, the larger this cloud.

Real scale

Burial time What happens
Hours to days Start of oxidation
Weeks Microscopic cloud
Months Detectable ionic cloud
Years Large ionic cloud
Decades Large and stable ionic cloud
Centuries Huge ionic cloud

Summary: a metal starts generating ions hours or days after being buried, but only after about 10 years does the ionic field become large enough for long-distance measurements.

Range of directional models

  • FG90: from a few centimeters up to 1 km or more
  • FG80: from a few centimeters up to 900 meters
  • DC2008: from a few centimeters up to 800 meters
  • HC300: from a few centimeters up to 700 meters
  • IGD2005 and DIAS 2005: from a few centimeters up to 100 meters

Why search in the North–South direction?

The ionic cloud formed around the metal is stretched by the Earth’s natural fields along the North–South axis. When sweeping in this direction, the detector crosses the greatest variation of the field, producing a stronger and more accurate signal.

Why does low humidity improve detection?

Water in the soil conducts electricity, spreading the charges and reducing the contrast of the ionic cloud. In dry soil, the gradients are more defined, making detection easier.

  • Avoid: rain, waterlogged soil, and heavy dew
  • Prefer: dry weather, sunshine, and firm ground

Does detection work through walls?

Yes. The detector senses the disturbance of the field, which passes through stone and concrete. However, it does not work well when there is metallic shielding.

  • Rebar or metal mesh
  • Steel plates
  • Metal safes
  • Reinforced concrete

Power source of IGD and DIAS models

The IGD and DIAS models do not use batteries.

IGD2005: Detects only gold (fixed sample).

DIAS2005: Allows inserting a sample of the desired material.
